Cordless Tool Battery Maintenance - Tips to Extend Battery Life
Caring for Cordless Tool Batteries
The lithium-ion battery is the most expensive part of a cordless tool. Proper care extends its life to 3-5 years instead of one year.
Proper Charging Rules
- Don't wait for full discharge: Lithium batteries don't need full discharge. Charge at 20-30%.
- Don't leave on charger for days: Remove after charging completes.
- Use the original charger: Non-original chargers may damage the battery.
- Don't charge when hot: Wait until it cools after intensive use.
- Charge at moderate temperature: 10-30°C is optimal.
Proper Storage
- Store battery at 30-50% charge (not empty, not full).
- Dry, cool place (15-25°C).
- Away from direct sunlight.
- Don't store in car in summer (heat kills batteries).
- If not using for months, charge slightly every 3 months.
What Kills Batteries
- High heat: Number one enemy. Don't leave in sun or near heat source.
- Repeated full discharge: Significantly reduces battery life.
- Drops and impacts: Internal cell damage may not show immediately.
- Moisture and water: Terminal oxidation and electronics damage.
- Wrong charger: Incorrect voltage or current damages cells.
Signs Battery Needs Replacement
- Doesn't last half the usual time.
- Gets hot quickly during charging or use.
- Swelling (danger sign - don't use it!).
- Charger doesn't recognize it or flashes red.
