Electrical Distribution Panels and Circuit Breakers - Installation and Maintenance Guide
Electrical Distribution Panels
The distribution panel is the heart of any building's electrical system. It contains circuit breakers that protect circuits from overload and short circuit.
Types of Circuit Breakers
- Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB): Most common in homes. Trips on overload or short circuit. 6A to 63A ratings.
- Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB/RCD): Detects ground fault current leakage and disconnects within milliseconds. Essential protection against electrocution.
- RCBO: Combines MCB and RCCB in one device.
- Molded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB): For large loads in factories and commercial buildings.
Electrical Load Calculation
Before installing a distribution panel, total loads must be calculated:
- List all appliances and lighting on each circuit.
- Sum total power in watts.
- Calculate current = Power / Voltage (220V).
- Select breaker rated at 125% of calculated current.
Safe Installation Standards
- Panel height 1.5-1.8 meters from floor.
- 1 meter clearance in front of the panel.
- Proper grounding for all circuits.
- Number and label every breaker and circuit.
