Protecting Tools from Rust and Corrosion - Metal Tool Care Guide
Why Do Metal Tools Rust?
Rust forms when iron is exposed to moisture and oxygen. In Jordan, winter humidity and exposed work environments accelerate rusting.
Rust Prevention Methods
1. Cleaning and Drying
Clean tools after every use and dry them completely before storage. Residual moisture is the number one enemy.
2. Lubrication and Oiling
- WD-40: Short-term protection and excellent rust remover.
- Light Machine Oil: Thin layer on metal surfaces for continuous protection.
- Grease: For moving parts and gears.
- Silicone Spray: Protection without greasy buildup.
3. Proper Storage
- Dry location away from direct moisture.
- Silica gel packets in tool box to absorb moisture.
- VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) liners for drawers.
- Don't place tools directly on concrete floor - use a shelf or mat.
4. Removing Existing Rust
- Wire Brush: For light surface rust.
- Fine Sandpaper: For flat surfaces.
- White Vinegar Solution: Soak small parts for several hours.
- Rust Removal Products: Fast-acting chemical solutions.
