18V vs 20V Lithium Batteries Comparison - Which to Choose for Cordless Tools?

Is 20V Stronger Than 18V?

Surprise: No! The difference is purely marketing. 20V MAX and 18V are effectively the same thing.

The Scientific Truth

A lithium-ion battery consists of cells. Each cell:

  • Nominal voltage: 3.6V
  • Maximum voltage (fully charged): 4.0V

5 cells in series:

  • Nominal voltage: 5 × 3.6 = 18V
  • Maximum voltage: 5 × 4.0 = 20V

So: 18V (Bosch, Makita) = 20V MAX (DeWalt, INGCO) = same battery!

Why Do Companies Use Different Labels?

  • Bosch & Makita: Use nominal voltage (18V) - more scientifically accurate.
  • DeWalt & INGCO & Total: Use maximum voltage (20V MAX) - marketing but not wrong.

What Actually Determines Power?

Voltage isn't everything. Influencing factors:

  1. Battery capacity (Ah): 2.0Ah, 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah, 6.0Ah - larger = longer runtime.
  2. Motor quality: Brushless motors are 25-50% more efficient.
  3. Electronic technology: Heat and overload protection.
  4. Cell quality: Samsung, LG, Sony cells are better than unknown sources.

Unified Battery System - Why It Matters

Each company has a unified battery system: one battery works on all tools of the same brand and voltage.

  • Makita LXT: Over 200 tools on one 18V battery.
  • Bosch 18V: Professional 18V system.
  • DeWalt 20V MAX: Over 200 tools.
  • INGCO 20V: P20S system.

Choose one system and stick with it to save on battery costs.
